When You are Ready to Take the Way of Rest

When You are Ready to Take the Way of Rest

For the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel has said this,

“In returning [to Me] and rest you shall be saved,
In quietness and confident trust is your strength.”
But you were not willing…

{ISAIAH 3015}

If you have been following this 31-day series from Weary to Worship, this devotional word study is designed to inspire weary mamas to find soul refreshment and become centered on God’s promises in the mess and mundane.

As we spent some time yesterday reflecting on the way of grace, we have come to a place of decision. I have never been very good at making decisions. My tendency to is look at the options and weigh potential outcomes. But in this? The Lord has been taking us on a journey to come away from our weariness and find newness in a life of worship.

I heard it said this week that our promise is in the process—I have found this to be undoubtedly true. He is teaching us courage in the waiting. He has drawn us out of hiding to find ourselves hidden in Christ’s love. We trust the Shepherd to carry our sorrows as we learn to share the burdens of others.

These are places along a spiritual journey, the undoing of myself—the person I have spent so much energy building up a version of who I thought God wanted me to be—and yet the most genuine expression of my faith in Him is my willingness to let go. To yield to his loving hand, the gentle nudge of his staff, submitting to his way of grace.

I can see how the way from weary to worship is in the unraveling of my will, when I have come to the end of myself, and choose the quiet confidence that leads me to rest in Him.

“Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength.” {ISAIAH 30:15}

In this last week of our study we are going to take a gentle approach to learning the rhythms of rest and renewal, and I pray that we would find restoration of our hearts as the Lord remakes us into his more perfect image by his grace.

Oh Lord, our Shepherd, teach us your path this week. Show us how to lay down our burdens at your feet and find real rest for our souls. Take the broken places, the pieces that wound us like shards, and rebuild us into a beautiful vessel, a masterpiece of your perfect plan. We have been emptied; fill us up again with your living water. Let us be willing to place ourselves into your gentle hand. May you guide us along right paths. Bring us to a place of quiet rest. Soothe our weary souls when we begin to fret or try again in our own strength. Remind us of your tender mercies that we would once again fall into your gentle rhythms of grace.

Amen.
