“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.”
After a recent family vacation, we had returned home with our luggage and began to unpack. I sorted out laundry, put away suitcases, and the toys we had brought to occupy our little girl. Before leaving the hotel, I made a checklist of things to be sure were packed and not left stranded in a drawer or under the bed.
Yet, our first evening home, as I tucked in my daughter to sleep, she suddenly panicked. She could not find her precious softy-blankie. You know the kind: it is square shaped, smallish, and the softest fuzzy fabric. It was her most treasured thing in the world.
How could it be gone? I thought. We had double and triple checked that nothing was left behind at the hotel. I knew I had put her stuffed animals and toys together, why wouldn’t her blankie be here? Sweet girl sobbed and cried the most pitiful tears. So I suggested that we pray. We speak about how God loves to hear her prayers. So we did, and I have to admit that part of me was resolved to the fact that the blanket was lost.
After two nights of bedtime prayers to find her blankie, something prompted her to reach inside her pillowcase. And wouldn’t you know it? Her blanket was stuffed all the way down inside the pillow where we had not looked before. But it was always there, safe and secure, right under her head.
The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a person discovered hidden in field. Filled with joy and excitement he hid the treasure again; then he went and sold everything else to secure the treasure for himself. God’s kingdom is a mystery planted in our hearts when we believe Jesus as Lord. We guard our hearts against anything that tries to steal away that hope.
We do this by hiding His word in our heart and hiding ourselves in His love.
Ephesians 1 describes our glorious position in Him. We do not earn this, it is a gift of God. We have been sealed with the Holy Spirit as a guarantee. These are mysteries too great for me to comprehend, but I am filled with great joy in the promise that I am hidden in Christ, and there I am made safe. God spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about things that were difficult to understand, “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known” (Jeremiah 33:3).
